Yanking on the cable will probably only be yanking on the sheathing...the inner wire won't budge. Let's see if someone has any ideas. Try searching also.
Remove the grill.Use a screw driver and some muscle to pry to part the wire where it hooks too. Towards the drivers side it should unlach. Then replace the needed part and spary it up with some grafite or white lithum spray. if it's just the handle and the bar it clips to is there a pair of vise grips should work.
Good luck. I had to do it last year to one of my trucks . It broke off at the latch on mine.

I broke the hood release cable on my f250 last week. Srercrcr is right about yanking the cable only pulling on the outer sheathing. On my truck I took the inner panel off inside the cab and used a pair of wire strippers to strip off the outer casing exposing the actual cable. With the cable exposed I simply used a pair of needle nose vise grips and pulled the cable, the hood popped open. Then it was just a matter of removing the broken cable and getting a new one at the junkyard for 10 bucks.
i'd have to agree with just stripping the outer sheathing, it'll save a lot of time and heartache, unless you snapped it off way under the hood. even then, you may be able to reach under the core support and grab the wire and strip it that way. its a lot easier than removing the front facia
Thanks everyone. My frind Pete was in town and he thought of the stripping the cable and vise grip thing too. It pooped right open. It's a lot easier than that old handle.
Now I just have to figure out how to reattach some sort of handle to that cable w/o welding. I don't think superglue is gonna work.
if you want a cheap handle, you could probably get a cable clamp at the hardware store. install a washer (with a hole small enough to not slide over the clamp) and you will have a simple, cheap handle.

does the term "getto" mean anything to you???
just get the handel, and a new cable since youve allready trashed it. Put some grease on the inner cable, and relube every year
well, its actually "ghetto," and for the guy on a low budget, or keeping a work truck in operating condition, there's nothing wrong with a little bit of southern ingenuity. yeah, it may not be a restoration quality repair, but not all trucks are show trucks either... I'm sure most people on this forum would admit to a few shadetree-mechanic repairs just to make it to the next paycheck, i know i have.
spending $5 on a temporary fix that only should cost $15 is stupid though...
I saw a kit at the local farm&barn for $14.99... Made by either "HELP" or leslie... New cable, and a new handle... granted its not a stock handle either... you could get that (or something really close) in the same section... "HELP" or "leslie"
