remote door locks don't work

My door locks don't work with the remotes. I have changed the batteries and still nothing. Tried to reprogram and that didn't work. Is the keyless entry controller known to go bad? What should I troubleshoot?

Does the interior light come on when you hit the unlock on the remote?

there is no attempt for the doors to unlock with the remote and the light in the cab does not come on. the buttons inside do unlock and lock all the doors. I have programmed the remotes to a buddy's truck and they work fine.

You said you tried to reprogram: did the locks cycle when you tried to reprogram?

The locks cycle fine. They lock and unlock when I go from drive to park and all that. When I reprogram the locks cycle like they should until I get the 10th one or so which is when it is in the program mode. I have no idea what the problem is.

OK- you lost me now. Turn key on (run) then off, 5 or 8 times. Last position should be "on" (run). At this point the locks should lock/unlock twice. Press any button on one remote, at a time. The locks should cycle (lock/unlock) for each remote. Then turn key off. Locks should cycle again to tell you they are programmed. You can program a maximum of 4 remotes.
This is for factory installed RKE with or without alarm. Dealer installed RKE is a different procedure.

Dave, the locks do just as you say they should, the 10 time thing was just a guess. They lock and unlock at the right point, but the remotes do not program. I have checked the remotes on a buddy's truck and they work fine on his. Could there possibly be a problem with the keyless control box which is located by the driverside kick panel? How do I tell if it is dealer or factory installed?

If they cycle as described, then that is the factory installed RKE. Do your remotes have the number 15K601 on the back? There will be other numbers as well, but they should have this number, most likely the first line.

Had the same on my '99 F-250. Check the GEM (General Entry Module). It's behind the fuse panel under the dash. Probably needs to be replaced.

That was my next thought if he has the correct remotes. The local Ford dealer can test the GEM to see if it has any codes related to the RKE stored.

I have two remotes, each slightly different numbers at the beginning, but both have the number 15K601.
