Power Steering Pump Question?

I just bought a '91 F150 (4.9L) and the PS pump makes a screeching
noise.

I sprayed some light oil behind the pulley and it stopped making noise.

I then removed the serpentine belt and found that I could move the PS
pulley in and out about 1/4". So I went and bought a remanned pump.
Today, I went to install the pump and noticed that the pulley shaft on
it also can be moved in/out about 1/4".

Anyone know if the 1/4" freeplay is normal or did I just buy a defective
remanned pump? Thanks.

I recently replaced mine due to it leaking fluid around the shaft. Both the old and the new one had some IN/OUT movement on the shaft. But the bad one would also move LEFT/RIGHT. As far as the IN/OUT movement, I did not measure it, I assumed since the new one had IN/OUT play as well, it must be OK. I have not had any problems with the new one.
