Brake Headache
Now that I am in the correct place.
I have 2 problems with the front brakes on my 1989 F150 4x4 302/5.0L w/manual hubs 3:54
1. The outer brake pad on the passenger side wore down to metal and destroyed the rotor, while the other 3 pads still have about 40% left.
2. After buying new rotors I noticed they did not have the hubs or wheel studs. The parts house claims that there is only one style of rotor for the '89 F150, but my Hanes book states that some F150's came with "integral rotor/hubs" and http://www.fordonlineparts.com/ lists the following part:
"ROTOR, F150, 4WD, Manual Hubs - F150 1980-91, Includes Inner & Outer Bearing Races"
-I emailed them about this part and was told it was discontinued.
My old ones appear to be one unit, but after several suggestions I hammered on them to see if they would separate....And I still can not even see a hair line crack where they would split if they were 2 pieces.
Does anyone know if "integral rotor/hubs" exist?
If so, where are they, or what are the part numbers?
Or is this a good excuse to buy a new Press?
#2 - Sometimes the rotor comes pre-assembled with the hub body attached, sometimes you can just buy the rotor itself. They are pressed together by the studs, and they do come apart. You have to pound all the studs out and the two will come apart easily. To put the new rotor back on, you either have to pound new studs back in, or you can have them pressed in. In both cases, you will definitely have to get the rotor turned before you can install it. Pounding or pressing the lugs in warps the crap out of the rotor.
You guys were correct, the wheel studs were holding the rotors to the hubs. My sledge hammer was making my arm tired and mushrooming the studs, I had to use a 12 ton press to remove them.
The other problem (#1) with the uneven brake wear.
A. The pistons in both calipers seem to move with the same amount of tension from a C-clamp.
B. I do not see any lubrication on the slides where the caliper sits.
How easily should the caliper slide in and out?
