I've got two 1965's. An F100 and an F250. The F100's clutch squeeks really bad, like a high pitched chirp chirp chirp when I depress the clutch pedal. It stops when I release the clutch. The clutch was replaced last year, but the mechanic was not so great. Just recently, my F250 has also started making the same noise when the clutch pedal is pushed in. Any ideas what is causing this and how I can fix it? Thanks.
It could be the pilot bearing. Will it squeek with a partially engaged clutch?? in other words if you push on the pedal until it contacts the pressure plate does it squeek??
Any way it goes the tranny has to come out and ALL clutch parts examined. Both of the prior suggestions are wise and likely causes of the symptoms described by Memphis446, but the other part of the question was what he could do to fix the problem.
Pull the tranny back and the problem will likely fall into your hand in the form of the release bearing. DON'T just slide in a new bearing to save a buck unless you really have to. If you plan on keeping your truck you will find great satifaction in knowing all of your clutch stuff is new and right. You wont regret it. I even seized the opportunity to put a rear main oil seal in my engine while my flywheel was off for surfacing during clutch repair on my 65. I have a 6cyl. so my seal was a knock in. I would not tamper with that if you have an FE engine unless it has to have one anyway. I could go on but the rear seal is off topic kind of. Do surface your flywheel unless you want clutch chatter (jumping). DONT skip the pilot bearing. A lot of people do and live to regret it. Keep mating surface perfectly clean.
Just a few tips for your upcoming anventureS in Ford clutch repair.
