Which 4 spd

I have a '66 f100, 390 w/ 3 spd and would like to upgrade to a 4spd. Is there a good alternative to the toploader which is expensive and hard to find?

What type of 4 speed? A car's like a Mustang Toploader T&C or a BW SR-4 from a Mustang II? or a pickup BW T-98 or T-18, or NP 435or the 4 speed OD from 79 F-150's? Do you need a low first gear or an easy shifting closely spaced ratio car 4 speed or even a 5 speed like a BW T-5 or a Tremec? For a truck 5 speed go for a NVG 4500.

I don't need a low first and would like something more like a car. Will any of these fit my bellhousing?

All you need is money.

A wide ratio top loader would work, but lacks OD. Thus your choice is tall gears or high revs on the highway.

The SR-4, and T-4 four speeds from the Mustang II cars are not a way to go, nor the average salvage yard T-5. Way too light for a 390 V8 truck, plus there are no bells available to hook them to a FE block anyway.
I'd suggest the OD version of the 4 speed top loader. Most folks don't seem to like them so should be cheap. They give you overdrive top gear, important in these days of high priced gas. See www.5speeds.com

The OD toploader, actually made by Tremec for Ford based on the toploader design, is not as strong as a real toploader.

On the David Kees site, he shows the difference under ID, "toploader imposters".

If you have a light foot, it may work, but no hammer down shifts, and watch out in OD as even with a 300 they caution not to tow in OD.
