Can I put an 8.8" complete axle with locking diff. & 3.73 gears from a 2001 Explorer into a 1991 F150 w/ 8.8" open diff. w/ 2.73 gears? And if so, would it be a fairly straightforward proceedure?
if you are taliking just the gears then yes you can and if you know how to set the pinion depth then yes it's pretty easy. oh yea and know how to set back lash.
I was thinking about the whole axle - but I found out the width of the Explorer is less, therefore the axles would be too short.
I talked to an oldtime shadetree mechanic who has 5 or 6 Fords in the backyard and he said he thought that by going to a L.S. differential, I'd need need axles that went with that type - or possible gring .020 or .030 off one or the other axle. He said he wasn't real sure though and his memeory wasn't what it once was. - kind of scared me off anything but a complete axle assembly swap to change over to L.S.
Unfortunately, F150 and Bronco axles are higher than Explorer axles at the local junkyard, and higher mileage on them, too.
I'd really like to switch over to the Limited Slip or Posi-Trac type rear, though.
You do not need different axles to swap in a trac loc. The center cross shaft is in the same place/location as an open carrier shaft. The explorer should be 31 splines and so should your truck. To buy a complete axle just for a trac loc that will more than likely need new clutches is a bit exspensive.
I've got a well used factory trac loc I can sell for cheap. Pm me if your interested.
