i have been thinking of regearing my axles to 4.11, but i have been thinking a wide ratio gear set for the tranny would be alot cheaper and probably give me what im looking for. it would make 1st gear like having 3.90 and 2nd like having 3.70 and i would still have my 3.50:1 for good highway milage. how much of a pain is it to get to the planetary gears and take them out and install them? what tools are needed etc.
Mike:
I went this route myself and was quite satisfied w/ results. An optional 2.72 low gear
set is available and makes for easier pulls when loaded; also yields slightly better city
mileage. Had a shop rebuild the tranny, so can't help much on tool requirements,
except to say that special types are needed.

I just finished my C6 rebuild...putting it back in the truck wednesday. I put the wide ratio gear set in mine, I hope it works well. IT WAS SO EASY! The C6 is not hard at all to rebuild, and I have never touched a tranny before. I had a book and a video on the subject from ebay, and put a small TV/VCR in the garage and followed it step by step. It was much more work to get the tranny out of the truck and up on the bench then the actual rebuild was.
I did not need any special tools at all, they say you need a spring compressor for one of the clutch packs, but a good friend will do the trick...One of you holds the springs down, the other installs or removes the snap ring. No big deal.
Go for it!
(I will be running the low gear set, and then 3.73's in the diffs with 33" tires. Should be nice.
