Bogs down when hot..?

This is posted in several areas as it's belonging in the areas.

The motor is a FE 360, pretty much stock, as far as I know and it's looks with a 4B. carb. Also, Im running straight pipes so the cats and stuff arent clogged.

I thought the bogging may be because my carb is open and may be sucking in hot air, as the bogging starts when I shut the hood while the truck is hot. -Good timing? Still possible since I didnt have time to test out that theory today.

I also read somewhere that a bad Alt may present some bogging as well, and since it looks pretty old, im assuming that it is. I was told to test out the alt by removing the pos. cable from the battery when the truck is running, it died. Confirms my dead Alt. theory, but since I haven't replaced it, im still curious. EDIT: Isn't the Alt.

Another theory I read is the water pump could present the bogging if it's old and worn; it looks pretty much like that. So I figure there's another possibility that I can follow. To futher this, I also notice the radiator making noises as if the water is settling, could be normal, but I never hear the same noise from the other four vehicles, so it's questionable.

To follow up on that, I hear the head gasket could be another culprit to that, but I rarely get smoke once the truck warms up, and from what I read, the smoke would intensify if there is a head gasket leak. Plus leaks would be visble and I hear the oil would be contaminated, and/or leaking.

So, I have a few ideas, but would hate just just dump parts into the vehicle if they are still good just to hope the problem gets fixed. Any ideas on the bogging. The vac. hose have been checked.

Just thought Id get an early start on my questions before I got to work on the bronco.

Thanks,
Zane

Check the timing?
Adust the air / fuel mixture screw on carb.
Check the voltage with the engine running at the battery terminal.
Pull the coil wire and check the color of spark, if spark is orange replace coi.
Check the choke on the carb is fully opening?
What is the vacuum reading on the intake?
Give the engine a compression test?

Post your results?

Where did the "Remove battery cable while running test" come from???? That is a sure way to damage the alt on an old vehicle and possibly fry the computer on a new one!! I am not criticizing you I just wish we could somehow stop that practice!!!

Now on to your questions
What do you mean by "the carb is open"? Also the 360 never came factory with a 4 bl, so something has been done to it in the past, not critical, just an observation.

Is it possible you have a vapor lock issue?

Hmmmm, I seem to have as many ???'s as you!! Fill in some info and we'll see what happens.

I have a 1984 Ford f250 with a 351 Windsor that used to bog down and smoke like the devil. What I did to correct this was I rebuilt the entire carb, new rotor, new wires, plugs, and readjusted the timing and it runs perfectly. As to the water settling sound my truck does that to and I havent had any problems, maybe think about a radiator dip?

I had a similar problem, it ended up being a clogged pick up screen in the gas tank. I blew some compressed air back through the fuel line starting at the fuel pump, and she ran like a champ. This is only a temporary fix of coarse, I than had to drop the tank and clean it.
