Unhappy Trans times two?

My 2001 psd lost it's first trans just under 60,000. Towing 13,500 fiver in lots of heat. Lost the front seal and dumped all the fluid heading up hill out of Vegas. Thank goodness for warrenties. To make sure this didn't happen again I put gauges, Banks trans command, a big, big trans cooler out front after the factory one. Even a real water temp gauge. And all has been well, temps stay down 140 to 170, got it up to 200 last summer outside Sedona. Two years no slippage and good towing until last weekend. After jocking the fiver into it's garage (temps reading 140 and below), I then parked the truck in the drive only to notice a few drops of tranny fluid bellow the flywheel cover. Does this tell me what I think? FRONT SEAL AGAIN?? Now that I'm out of warrenty any suggestions?

Maybe not. Were you jockeying the fiver around quite a bit while in reverse gear? Some folks have reported here that theirs leak fluid, sometimes severely, under these circumstances, only to have it not ever return until those same criteria are once again met.

Wait and see if the "leak" continues before you go running to the tranny shop.

Got a 4X4? Use low range and leave the front hubs unlocked for those types of maneuvers.

Pop & Kwick both have good suggestions. You might also try letting it sit and idle for 10 or so minutes to relieve the pressure and cool back down after parking.

Kwikk, could you explain how this works? Someone I work with does this when pulling heavy and slow and I thought it was useless.

have you ever ran in 4x4 low range? do you know how much more torque you are putting down? it basically amplifies the torque, the final output ratio is ALOT lower. you can get a much heavier load rolling ALOT easier with less slippage in the transmission. slippage=heat. in this case, the reverse is ALOT lower, which means the truck can get the fiver moving alot easier. the front driveshaft and axles will still be turning, but since the hubs aren't locked, the front wheels are basically "freewheeling", leaving the front tires free to steer and not have to worry about torque steer from the low angle U joints in the spindles.

i use low range when pushing alot of snow, to the point where you need traction and momentum to keep the truck moving and pushing. the low ratio gets the pile moving easier. since there is less slippage, the wheels tend to "break free" and spool up with no traction LESS, when it is in lowrange.

so 4xhigh range would be useless with hubs unlocked right?
just be putting tcase and running gear into motion w/no real benefit

If you have the ESOF working you will just need to install a switch in the solenoid on the passenger side wheel well. Then when you want 2wd low range, just cut off the switch and then shift to 4wd low. The front hubs won't lock and you will have 2wd low. It comes in handy alot when backing trailers.

yes, basically. only benefit would be to warm up the front differential for a fluid change. but i could do the same thing by having the hubs locked in 2 hi.

that's from being on here too much. i was hunt-n-peck when i started, im a master typer now.

Joe, another option for those with ESOF is to put Warn manual hubs in like i did, cap off the vacuum lines, and have a manual hub system with electronically controlled transfercase shifting. i would have the stick on the floor if i could choose. not with lariat

Yes, The torque multiplier of the four low was what I knew about bit somehow didn`t click with me being used with hubs unlocked. Thanks Strokin_it for pointing that out.
