i have manual locking hubs on the front wheels of my 78 f150. i do not understand what they do. What does it do when they are on the lock or free postition. it really makes no sense to me. All i know is that i can turn my front driveshaft with my hand when they are in the free position and the transfer case is not in 4 wheel drive. can anyone explain these to me please. thankyou.

When the transfer case is engaged power is transfered to the front axle shafts. Locking the hubs connects the axle shafts to the rotors so you get power down to the ground. Unlocking the hubs just prevents the front driveline from turning when you are not using 4X4.
