I have a 1963 F100 Styleside with a 292 in it. It has a 3 speed manual tranny in it that was on column and put on floor by previous owner. I would like to put an automatic transmission in it, but keep the engine if possible. How could I convert this. If I can't, what type of engine and tranny would you suggest? I would also like to change out the steering column with something tilt and with power steering, perhaps even a little shorter. I hate that the steering wheel is right in my chest practically. Are there any later model trucks out there that can be put it to changed it over. There are a lot of salvage yards in my city and I'm sure I could find what I need there. Thanks in advance for any help.
Hi Keven, Welcome to FTE
There weren't many trucks with auto trannys in 63. Choosing one from a car is going to be your best bet for a direct fit. You will have to have an adapter to use a modern OD tranny.
One of our regulars that is more knowlegable on your year truck will be here shortly with a better answer.
if you want to keep things original you will need a bell from a truck with ears to mount it.any year will do as long as it has a y block.not all that easy to find.ive seen several on ebay.
Automatic truck bells are rare. best is to purchase a conversion kit for the C4 transmission by Mumert if you want to keep the 292.
If you want any other engine there are readily avalible engine and transmisson mounts for every combo of ford motors produced even transvesite engines. Speedway Motors in Nebraska has the cheapest cost on them.
As for tilt you are SOL as the steering box and inner shaft are an integral unit. It can be done but really good fabrication skills are needed in re engineering the shaft.
it may also be possible to just leave your front mount in place and build a crossmember to mount your tranny and forget about the center mount.these c4 kits are pricey.around 500.you can see one at www.ford-y-block.com
Thanks everyone for all your input. I am toying with the idea of going with new engine and tranny, just don't know which one. I've been told the 292 is hard to get parts for. Ive thought about going big block. I love horsepower. Any suggestions?
292 is just as easy to get parts for as a big block. Just need a little more in the brains department as there harder to rebuild.

I left out 351 modifieds and 400 modifiedes as i dont consider them engines only boat anchors. JMHO
Depends on what your going to use it for. If you want to tow loads or build a street racer then big block, 390 - 460 is the way to go. if however you want a nice cruser, find a late model wrecked car with a EFI or carb 302 or 351 and a AOD over drive. you will end up with a nice cruser and good gas milage. I tow a Bass boat so i have a 352 with a C6. it realy depends on what you want. building a hot slick is fun, differant and expencive. but as a cruser it's great. If I were to do it over I would go with the 351 winsor and a AOD, good mileage and you could tow in a pinch.
jav409 has offered excellent advice. I would never advise putting a 5.0/302 in a pickup but recently had the opportunity to drive a 90 year model F150 with the efi 5.0 and was pleasantly surprised at it's performance. It was still way off from the FE in my 66 though.
You are talking a major undertaking, a lot of planning is in order.
