Question Cluster Question

I was in the boneyard Sat. with my nephew looking for an motorized setbelt for his 93 escort and came across what I believe to be a 1972 F250 there. I have a speedo problem that a new cable and gear haven't fixed, bounce and needle sticking, and I was wondering if instead of taking cluster apart for speedo head, if I could just replace the whole thing? My cluster has "idiot" lights for alt. and oil and the "junk" one has full gauges. It also has a white background w/ black letters where my is the opposite, black w/ white letters. Any way to exchange them, provided it works, meaning would I have to replace sending units for oil or alt, or shjould I just get for the speedo head? I've searched this forum for related topics but didn't see this question. All answers greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
( maybe it will still be there next Sat. I should have plucked it just because....... )

I think you can simply replace the sending unit for the oil pressure gauge with the actual gauge version (the idiot light version is just a switch), but to make the amp gauge work -assuming it's still good- requires a little modification.

There were changes to the design so that 72 circut board will only work with a 71-72. The 70 was unique and 69 and older did not use a circut board, but wires.

And you will need to replace ALL sending units for the guages vs idiot lights.

yep...they change every year, as does the pinout of the pigtail connector. if you are changing from ID10T lights to gauges, you will have to change the sensors as well. If the pigtail is still attached to the cluster, get it & as much length of the wire as you can.

Sounds like to me I would better off snatching the cluster just for the speedo head. Seems like a lot of the "bright" ideas I have get more involved than I think they will be. Oh well! I will still go get the cluster provided it's still there this weekend and someone else hasn't gotten there first. I think I read on another post that the Econline vans through 1975 have the same cluster in them too. I saw one of those there also. Maybe ****** it and have a second option available. Sometimes, two "heads" are better than one! If anyone else has a suggestion, I'm still open for your opinions. Thanks in advance for your input.
