Technical question on suspension

Maybe someone can answer this? I'm planning on taking my front leaf springs in to half a spring shop reverse the eyes of the springs. Its my understanding that the reverse eye will lower the front about 1/2 to 1" depending. Will reversing the eye change the travel clearance between the axle and frame bumper and the travel of the front shocks? Or does the clearance remain the same but the body/ frame is lower because of the reverse eye?

You are lowering the truck, so you will decrease the distance between the frame and the axle and compress the shock a bit as well.

Ed -

So this spring shop will charge less to reverse-eye the springs than replacing the main leaf with an already reversed one? Unbelievable!

Will this shop also be shortening the second leaf so it doesn't bottom on the edge of the reversed eye? That is almost always required.

Randy, I found a place through some of the hot rodding buddies. It's called Hollywood Springs, in Hollywood, CA. The guys been doing leaf springs and hot rod suspensions for over 40 years. He's one of those guys who looks at it and knows what to tweak, bend, etc. I asked him on doing the reverse eyes and maybe rearching my worn out springs. If I take the springs off and bring them to him, $150 for both with the reverse eye, rearching etc. If I bring him the truck, $250.... and he does it all, and he knows his stuff.

I know how to re-arch them with a "bar rolling" machine where dad works. I have no clue how the reverse eye one (unless they use a forge and a hydraulic press-dads shop has those as well). Keep us updated on how it goes. Especially if you see how he does them.

While on the subject .... what if you installed a drop axle and left the leaf spring stock? Wouldn't it be lower with the stock suspension height (travel)? As I plan on doing this. Also in the rear .... would a rear flip kit for the leaf spring lower the rear as well but keep the same (stock) leaf springs? Or would it be easier just to take a couple leafs out? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Mason

Mason, I've done just about everything possible to lower my stock suspension and am as low as I can go without hitting the frame. I have a 2" drop axle in the front, but everything else is stock with the exception of a few leafs taken out. I've got slightly over an inch clearance in the front, that's it. The rear I didn't go with the flip kit, because it's too much drop and you really should C notch the frame rails for clearance to do it right. (didn't want to cut into my frame rails). I'm thinking about going with the reverse eye springs in the front just to bring it down slightly and rearch the springs because mine bow the wrong way, basically worn out but still useable and maybe stiffen the front over pot holes.

I reversed the eyes on my rear main leaves about a month ago. It was faster to do it at home than to drive to and from a spring shop (both leaves about 1 hour total-I have not done it multiple times and am slow). AX will tell you to do it with a piece of rail and a hand sledge. I did it in my small homemade hydraulic press. If he re-arches all of the leaves $150 is certainly fair.

They are there. Go to the site, put in your year, then type in spring (search term). They came up on page 3 for me with 54 (assume thats what you need) as the year.

Front [2853] and rear [2864-5354] (MLO) low and reversed eye. $99 each.

I did that on my '53. But I added teflon strips between the leaves. It netted out to about a 2.5 inch drop. The rest I'll do with low profile (different aspect ratio) tires and rims.

Are any of you guys that have the front reversed eye springs happy with the ride? Most that I have talked with say they are constantly bottoming out and it is very unpleasant.
