Cracked Block
I have a 390 engine apart. The block, heads and crank have been cleaned and mag fluxed. The bores look realkly good but the process found an inch and a half long crack extending from a center freeze plug hole. The technician recommended welding it as the rest of the block looked good. I am adverse to shocking the block via welding. I have heard that if a hole were to be drilled at the end of the crack that is taper reamed and plugged with a brass taper pin that the crack would not get longer. (I have these tools). I am not worried about leakage later but am wondering if this is advisable. This crack may have been there for a long time although I never had leakage there when the engine was in service

I had the same thing with my block, I grooved the crack slightly and filled it with J-B weld. It's at almost 4 years with no problems. As far as welding goes, to do it right you would have to warm the entire block slowly, weld, then let it cool slowly. There are places around that do this. My friend owns a welding shop that does it with excellent results. I've seen him completely rebuild a blown out Hemi head. Anyway, all I'm saying is there's more than one way to skin a cat.
