I would love to hear from the people who have had headgasket replacement using studs, with the following info:
1) Whose studs and Torque value used.
2) Whose Gasket and Ring type (solid wire 'Fire' or 'combustion').
3) Miles since installation.
ARP and ATS for head studs. The Ford head gasket is a five layer steel and does not require a fire ring unless you plan on using 120lbs of boost. The more boost you create the more heat you create. With the bigger injectors and turbo's being used right now the boost levels are lower and moving more air.
I'll let you know a year from now how things are going.

I have the headstuds in my possession, My friend owns the Ford dealer, where my dragracing friend happens to be the top diesel tech, they are going to do the work. I have seen 15 or 18 of the trucks with the cab off, and only want to do it once. I am really looking for some solid mileage numbers along with the other info; so I can make a decision on which gasket. Is your truck already studded, using a factory MLS gasket? I looked at the 'improved' version of the factory gasket, and although there must be some change, they look virtually identical to the early gasket.

The problem is not the gasket. Torque to yeild bolts found loose along with warped heads are the some of the causes. New heads from Ford parts have been found out of spec.
No other gasket is available unless you do a custom $$$$ cut one. The multi layer OEM is hard to beat.
I agree the MLS gasket technology is a good one, and that torque-to-yield bolts are the root problem, but... I have yet to talk to ANYONE that has studded their truck with either an ARP stud at 245 lbs. of torque, or the ATS studs at 175 lbs. with a factory gasket. I am sure someone out there has done it, and I would love to hear that there is absolutely no problem whatsoever after the installation of the studs. I know the factory modified gasket and fire ring from ATS works, and I know the custom gasket and combustion ring from Hypermax works also, but I would really like to hear some longevity stories from ANYONE running studs with ANY type of gasket, that was the purpose of this thread... like I said, I only want the cab off of this truck once for a very long time. And yes, I have seen a grip of low mileage heads going back to FOMOCO/NAVISTAR due to warpage.
You won't find longevity stories here at FTE or any other forum because none of this has been on the market long except Hypermax. The fire ring is used under high boost conditions. Overkill to your wallet is in store, but if you want, fire ring the head and be done with it.
Anybody know what the going rate for firering upcharge if already re-studding?
Lots of questions these days re: different ways to handle power increase just looking for real world experiences?

Hey SoCalsuperduty03,
What dealership are you talking about? Id like to get the heads worked on in my truck but I dont want to take it to any shop, Id rather take it to someone who's "top notch" like you id rather have the cab lifted once not twice. Currently my truck is in the shop getting 2 injectors replaced, along with the injector wiring harness. I thought about asking them to do my head gasket but I want some custom work done with "better" stuff then what Ford has to offer. Isnt there a different set of head studs made from H13 toolsteel? I remember talking to Matt about those how many different sets of head studs are on the market for this motor? anybody know?
Hey Industrial Dude,
If I remember correctly Matt was telling me that H11/H13 were perhaps the same material, just different designations depending on the manufacturer/distributor. I have seen different place doing headgaskets, and wasn't very impressed by many. The dealer my friend owns just also happens to employ some very long time friends... The Diesel tech; one of the Wholesale Parts guys, one of the Service Writers, etc. Sometimes it is who you know. Drop me a PM with a # where I can reach you, if I remember correctly, I want to talk to the guy that did your trans.
LOO,
One more thing.... Hypermax has finally finished testing, and released, their latest 6.0 cylinder head gasket kit, uses firerings, but does not require machining a groove in the block or head. $500.00, and they have even tested with a factory torque-to-yield bolt.
