I have a 99 PSD 6-speed 97000 miles production date 1-99. Tuck takes about ten seconds of cranking when cold to get started and once started there is a loud hissing noise coming from the exhaust while idling and it stops after the truck is warmed up. During the first approx. 10 miles of driving I hear a hissing sound coming from under the hood on the passenger side when letting off the throttle at around 1500-2000 rpm and truck seems to be bogged down. I have a bully dog power pup downloader, but it still acts the same with or without it. Beetween idle and 2000 rpm truck has verry little power and still doesn't have much at 2000 or above. I took the truck to the dealer that I bought it from and supposedly his mechanic performed an injector test and a compression test and said it was o.k. This is the second 99 PSD I have owned and my other truck never did anything like this and was much faster without a chip. Thanks for any help
hello Wayne G, welcome to FTE. the sound you describe is perfectly normal. it is the Exhaust BackPressure Valve in the turbo that closes and restricts flow. it is designed to keep the heat in to allow for warmup. the hissing is normal. read around the boards some, do some searching. if you want to disable it, just ask.
The noise you are describing when it is cold outside, is normal - it is the Exhaust Back Pressure Valve closing. It basically puts a load on the motor, vie the backpressure, to let it warm up a little faster. ALSO - It will continue to close even when you are driving, (unless you punch the go pedal hard, then it will kick off on it's own so it doesn't create high exahaust temps) until the Oil Temperature reaches 140*.
Thanks for the info on the exhaust backpressure valve. How do I disable it and is it safe? Also is dissconnecting the wastegate beneficial and if so how do I do it. I still dont know the cause of the power loss it seems to not have enough power all the time even when warmed up. The truck does the same thing whether I have the chip on 50 70 or 120 h.p. and the chip doesnt seem to make much difference than stock it just makes a louder rattling noise under 2000 rpm. Also is the afe stage 2 intake worth nthe extra money? Sorry for so many questions . thanks for the help.
