problem has really got me stumped

Ok, I've been noticing that my 460 has been starting hard when warm. This last friday I went out to get a (whoooohooooo!!!) 351 Cleveland for my Tbird. On the way back it was dark, and I was headed down the interstate. All of a sudden my wife and I heard a high pitched buzzing noise coming from under the dash. I tried shutting the heater off, then the radio. THen I thought it would be smart to shut the engine off to see if the buzzing went away. Well, the buzzing stayed on. As soon as I hit the starter (still going 75 MPH) BOOM, I lost all my headlights, everything, I had NO electricity flow whatsoever.

Well, I've tried recharging the battery, jumping accross the starter solenoid, I put a new ground strap from the block to the cab. That isn't working.

Now, with the battery fully juiced, the dome light stays light with the key in the Accessories position. As soon as you turn it to the "run" position it goes VERY dim. I've got a nasty short somewhere, but where???? Could it be the ignition controll box???? I just don't know. What do you guys think it is?

Thanks in Advance,
Corey

Have you changed the starter? It may be bad. I have seen cars crank really slow when hot because the starter was going out. When I first got my truck I had a bad connection at the batter and when I went to crank everything would go out and I would have to move the battery cables to get it to come back on. Eric

i would replace the solenoid too. It's only a couple bucks, then you'll know it's not that. Better to do that before the starter, just because it's way easier to get out. Finding a short in all the wiring is going to be a nightmare! Are there any inline fuses in the circuit?>

I got it fixed! But it was really strange. The night it quit on me I checked batt voltage 12.4, then I tried jump starting the truck from my other truck. Nothing happened, and the battery cables got hot. So I checked battery voltage again 9.6 volts - The only thing I can figure out is that there is something very screwed up with that ford battery. Oh well, it was a good one, lasted 9 years.

Thanks for the info guys,
Corey
