On my 73 f250 the amp meter wasn't working...found the prior owner had cut the wires to same when he removed the second battery wireing...the red wire at the engine end is hanging in space...anyone have an idea where/what it is hooked up to?
thanks in advance

You think that now the red wire probably goes to the voltage regulator, but i have seen very few ford ammeters that actually work and they were in 86 model trucks i have never seen a 70's ammeter work ! Big Brown Truck is right but he likes voltmeters where I like a good quality ammeter that doesnt measure current over a shunt
I agree with the above about amp meter vs volt meter as each has its place. The point of my exercise is that the guage is not working so I intend on fixing it....I have ordered a wiring diagram so that (I hope) will give me the answers.
As a side note the fuel, oil pressure and temperture gauges are of the same type movement (milli amp meter) as the amp meter it is the type of pickup that is differant with each.

It's good that you are trying to get the wiring straightened out on your truck. But don't be too disappointed when you get it right and the amp guage doesn't do much. That's what these guys are trying to tell you. Brand new right off the assembly line these guages are not very good at relaying any useful information.
LAST EDITED ON 29-Mar-01 AT 09:25 PM (EST)[p]As a point of interest I finally repaired the Amp meter on my 73 F250 camper special....As reported by others the gauge as installed by the factory left something to be desired, So with a new wireing diagram and some new resistance wire the gauge is operational and of all things accurate. Refined the shunt between splices s201 and s202(3.2 ohms).
