Shocks

I (still) have a 1990, 5.0l full size. I get thumping sounds when I hit speed bumps or potholes or cross train tracks. I thought the tailgate window was loose, but that's not it. Then I thought the spare tire contraption was loose, not that either, although the bushings in the hinge have a bit of play, it is solid when the wheel is closed against the tailgate.

So I'm thinking I need to replace the shocks and would appreciate some advice as there is quite an array to choose from. I will be towing on occassion a 27' trailer that has a hitch-pin weight of approx 300lbs. Should I get adjustable air shocks? Or gas? or what? I don't do any serious off-roading and don't want anything too stiff.

While I'm at it, Princess Auto has attachments for the leaf springs to "bolster" them, basically it's another leaf you simply bolt on. Are these a good idea? I don't know if the leaf springs are shot or not, but I'm sure the shocks are.

Thanks in advance.

The PA add-a-leaf aren't good if you are carrying a load all the time. They are pretty much for every now and then when you need a little extra. I have udes monroe sensatrac and they were good (got a good deal on them), alot of guys have rancho ... pretty much depends on what you would like to spend. Just don't buy the $20.00 ones at Canadian Tire.

If it is the extra leaf that bolts on with some ubolts, don't waste your money, to say the very least, they are cra*.

As far as shocks, if you have dual front shocks, you will need to get rid of one(the one in front of the axle), because the other stiffens the ride more than you would think, and they are basically for looks, and just cost you more when you have to buy 2 extra shocks.

I would suggest skyjackers Nitro gas charged shocks, they are just as good in quality as Rancho's RS5000, but cost less. Unless you offroad often, adjustable shocks are just lot of money to leave in one possition(which the Nitro shocks will already be in).

I like the Rancho shocks. I have had both the 5000's and the 9000's, and no problem with either. I find the adjustable feature on the 9000's very helpful when setup with an air compressor system, both on and off road. I have never tried the Skyjacker shocks, only they're steering stabilizers, but I would guess that they are good shocks too. I never had a problem with ride stiffness from the dual shock setup, I would leave it as be, it provides extra damning on those washboard dirt roads at 50 mph.

94F150, try taking off one of those front shocks and you'll feel a difference.
I agree Rancho 5000 shocks are good, b/c the Skyjacker Nitro shocks are the same things, and I have the Nitro shocks, both gas charged, same extension, everything.

I have KYB Gas-A-Just (only 4) shocks , factory towing package, rear sway bar. Use it for highway towing heavy 14' trailer with two four wheelers. It rides and handles great with or without trailer. I only get off road when I stick a 4WD four wheeler and go pull it out with the Bronco.

Skyjacker makes good products, I agree with you. Summit has the RS5000 at 41.99 and the SKY Nitro at 38.95, so the price is pretty comprarable between the two. Considering the price is about the same I would say either shock will get the job done.
