289l-302l

I'm wanting to take out my 2.9L and drop in a new V8 (289 or 302). I'm wondering if anyone has done this before and if so, what sorts of problems did you run into. I'm also replacing the entire drive line as well, so I know there are going to be modifications to the driveshafts. That part is taken care of, but is there anything else that I might have to consider?

There have been a number of discussions about dropping in the 302 (5.0 L). Do a search of the forum.

I think a lot of the parts would come from a 5.0 Explorer, and shouldn't be too hard, but I haven't really looked into it.

Yeah if you can find a junked 5.0 Exploder, you can basically pull everything required right out and drop it right in your truck. If you want a hot rod better get a nice rear end to as I've learned, 3.73s or 4.10s if you can find 'em.

Google Ranger V8 swap and you'll pop a bazillion results. The 302 is an INCREDIBLY popular swap. Others can be done (I'm doing a 5.7L swap this summer myself). The 351W will fit, but it's hard as everything to cram it in there.

The most popular seems to be a 302 with an auto tranny.

5.7 Chevy? I hope you mean 5.8L Ford (351).

Advance Adapters has a good how-to in .pdf format.
