problem or just age?

i have a 97 150 4x4 xcab it has a 4.6 w/ 167k miles
it has recently started missing upon starting if sets overnite. i have also noticed
the smell of antifreeze at the same time.it seems a little more sluggish than usual even for the whopping 207hp it had at 0 miles. i'm starting to think i have a head gasket going but am hoping someone can convince me otherwise. i haven't done a compression test yet will this help?

now to the second ques. is there any visual way to tell the diff between a pi motor/ non pi motor how about program diffs

any help appreciated

The PI engine came out in 99. It will have PI stamped on the exhaust side of the head.
I would have the cooling system pressure tested. This will show where the leakage may be.

My 97 5.4 only had about 185rwhp (I can't recall exactly, but it was nowhere near 200rwhp) so consider yourself lucky in the power department.

the hp #'s were just a guess, and probably at the flywheel. if your 5.4 had 185 i'd be scared to see my actual #'s. thanks for the input

Check your Oil, see if you have AF or water (if so) = Head gasket. If you have Oil in your water you have (BIGGER, block) problems.

How old are your plugs/wires?

The pugs are autolite platinum, and the wires are bosch they are both about a year old, with about 16,000 miles on 'em. two of the o2 sensors were changed, i'm not sure why the third wasn't(done before i got the truck).but i'm not getting any error codes.more recently, i'v noticed a pecking coming from down low, kinda hoping it's the start of an exhuast leak

you can get a block check kit for just about any parts store this is and easy way to find out if you have a head gasket problem. the kit has all the distructions in it. but for the most part you put the blue liquid into the glass and hold it to the top of the radiator and if it turns green your head gasket is bad
the kit is cheap and saves in time.

well got the oil changed, it was clean, and dont see any oil in the water. haven't gotten the block test kit yet seems to be running fine not getting hot and the coolant res. is not losing any fluid. i may just have tu run'er ' till she pukes
