How difficult would a dual tank conversion be on an 87 e-150? My biggest concern is how the fuel pump setup is. Are there two pumps one for each tank, and if so, are they external or within the tanks? Haven't done much research on the topic I admit, just was wondering the practicality of it.
My 81 E100 4.9 came with commercially installed dual tanks and the pumps are on the outside. The rear Main is 22 gals with the front Auxillery is 18 gals.
Either a Haynes or Chilton's will show you a schematic of where the pumps are located and how they work (and anything else you might want to know including troubleshooting). These cover all years from 60s up through 1990 in one book. But the Haynes has a better electronics/wiring schematics
The manual switch up front and the tank valve electrically switches the fuel pump's power from one tank sump's power wiring to the other, and switches between the fuel gauge sender wires as well. Basically, the computer and gauges are not involved in the process in any way.
Guess I'll have to crawl under some vans at U-Pull-It. Would I run into tank mounting problems with having the 124"? I know it's a tight fit for the fuel door/assembly thing, but it looks like there is plenty of room for a tank behind the bumper (have the tank up front).
I just installed a transfer tank from transfer flow, and it included all the parts, guage, and the computer. I think they may have a tank for the rear of a ford van.
