My rear end is whining like crazy and i think its time to bebuild. i'm going in there to replace the bearings and ring& pinion gears. I'm not positive about what gears are in there now. I think they're 3.55 i'd like to go to 3.73 gears and i'd like to know what i'd run into when i do this. Do i have to recalibrate the speedometer? how do i figure out what gears i have now? What are some of the draw backs to going to 3.73's?
After that, you should decide just what level you would like (ie. what size tires you will use, how often you are on the interstate, etc.) to determine the best gears for your use.
Changing them is not difficult, but you had mentioned completely redoing your pumpkin. I would use a master kit, and make sure it comes with all the bearings and seals.
You may get the best info by asking around in the differntial section of the forums.
when new there was a tag under one of the cover bolts w/ the gear ratio on it. If no tag the math should be: rpm X tire diameter / mph x 336 = gear ratio
I looked at the tag on the rearend and it say 5844B 55 88 3E12. I think that means its 2.73 gears but i just wanna make sure i'm decoding it right. If they are 2.73 i think 3.73 are too big for what i'm using the truck for. I just want a good all around gear any suggestions? i may end up getting bigger tires down the road but nothing too crazy 31"s or 33"s depending on the size of lift i end up getting when i have some extra cash. thanks in advance.
