clunking over rough road

I just replaced all 4 shocks on my 71 F250 (2wd), and it rides great. except that when I go over rough(ish) road (seems like thats all there is in New England) the passenger front suspension, clunks rather harsh..in previous vehicles I would guess it was the ball joints, but none to be found..everything seems tight. and the rest of the suspension holds up fine over the rough stuff..I'm geussing that the right fron seems to take the brunt of abuse ( since roads seem to be worse on that side) thanks for any suggestions...Chris

My first guess is radius arm bushings. After that, all other bushings or king pins, but king pins dont usually do this unless they're about to fall out!

My '7o F100 does the same thing. Mine is caused by a bad cab mount.

Just from experience a ball joint usually doesn't make any noise. On a lot of trucks it is a good idea to preload the ball joint. This will make movement easier to see. Also try having someone shake the steering wheel while you look at the drag link and tie rod ends and such. The truck must be on the ground and the steering wheel movements slow and precise. Any slight visible play can cause a nasty noise.
Good Luck

When my 79 f150 did that it was the radius arm bushings. Good luck!

This is common assuming you have the same factory dual-piston calipers up front as I do on my '69 F250 Camper Special. If the clunking goes away when you apply the brakes, then this is what it is. The fix is to install new pins, bushings, mounting pin isolators, and anti-rattle springs.
