EBPV operation?

I know the backpressure valve closes or opens during engine warmup, but should it ever activate after the engine is warmed up? During an hour drive home tonight about 2/3 to 3/4 of the way home the valve was coming on, because my EGT's went up and I had no boost.

Is there any reason it would be activating after the engine has been at operating temperature for a period of time? It was around 20 degrees outside, I'm wondering if that had some sort of effect?

Being 20 degrees outside, it is possible that your EBPV will shut. Especially if say you're cruising the highway with little to no load. All the cold air can cause the engine to cool down to the point where the truck thinks it's not warmed up. In temps that cold, it's not a bad idea to run a cold front type of grill or insert on a diesel.

today's diesels' cooling systems are very overbuilt, to satisfy the most demanding load, the cooling system is very efficient at wicking away the heat. even with the thermostat closed, the engine can get too cold to be efficient. that is why the EBPV comes on, to hold heat in the engine and try to warm it up. it will only come on in temps below 37*F and when the oil temperature is less than 140*F.

i would mock up a cold front or buy one if you want that professional look. i made one out of cardboard and secured it to the back of my grille, painted black. you can't even tell it is behind there, even on close inspection. you have to put your hand on it to tell it's there. i can take it off in less than a minute.

Ok, thats what I was curious about. I figured if the thermostat was closed it should stay warm enough to keep the engine at operating temp, but I did wonder about putting something infront of the radiator.

I was just worried something was malfunctioning, thanks guys.
