I would like to put the 351w engine from my 85 ford van into my 78 ford f150 (which currently has a 351m engine). Do I need special engine mounts? Where do I find them?
I think your engine perches will work with W mounts. You do know the tranny bolt patterns are different, right? Thats probably the biggest problem with your swap.
You need to get engine mounts from a 302 or 351W truck motor. The van engine mounts are quite different. Both my 351W's came from vans. Get a tranny from a 302 or 351W van or truck (should be plenty around) and get ready to have fun. The 351W is much more fun than the 351M (and I speak from experience)
Any other questions about the swap just feel free to ask.
You are going to have to be creative about exhaust. Maybe the Y pipe from the van will work? Or have Duals fabbed at exhaust shop if legal. I'm under the understanding that the angle off the heads of the M's cleveland style heads, would mean that the exhaust locates differently between the two engines. I have yet to find a listed application for 351w headers in 70's era trucks. Your Windsor should sit fine on the M's engine perches, you might need pickup motor mounts though, from a 302. When I bought engine perches for the 302 in my 76, the truck specialty yard I got them at had them labeled for 302,351,400. I almost replaced the bad 302 I had w/ a 351w but got gunshy about exhaust since it wasn't going to be technically legal for me to have duals fabbed and just the expense of having an exhaust shop make special pipes discouraged me from low dollar solution.
If your truck is 2wd you definitely need custom exhaust, the van pipe won't clear the crossmember between the cab mounts. For wiring, just use the harness off of the M or get one from a 302 truck of the same year.
