When I start driving it in the morning sitting still overnight the lockup do not engage before I have driven about a 1.5km or so. it is at the same spot almost every time. If I turn of the OD then it shifts to third so it must be the lockup that is engaging late. For the rest of the day it is working fine and there are not any other problems with the transmission. The oil seems red and fine and it is just at the lower limit.
Could this be an electrical sensor/contact problem, to little oil or am I in for a rebuild?
Yes, for the computer to give a path to ground for the lock-up solenoid to work your tranny must be at operating temp (around 130 degrees), it must be in 3rd gear, have little load on the engine, and your foot off the brake switch.
