Okay my son has a 1980 F100 with a 302 and a 1984 with a 300 six. The '84 has the three speed on the tree. The 302 has a shelled SROD. He wants to put the 302 in the '84 against the three speed(low bucks so no tranny swaps if possible) in the '84. What he needs to know is will he need to change out the motor mount perches(?) or keep the ones from the six? The '84 has a hydraulic clutch so that part is easy. Yeah he knows that if he fries 'em he will shell the three speed.
Thanks guys
Okay sorry about the id change. I keep forgeting my son fordbeast_80 doesn't logg out. I have the above mentioned son, actually four of them so any help on whether we need to change motor mount perches or not will be greatly appreciated. As I said he has little $$$ so even though a diff trans or what would be better we have to go with what he has.
To install the 302 in place of the 300, the frame mounts from the 80 will need to be swaped into the 84. The 3-on-the tree bellhousing will bolt up with out any problems.
Thanks Mudman. I went and looked and we will need to swap out the crossmember under the motor. Actually doesn't look to bad, on the 302 frame we will need to grind off two rivets and unbolt a couple of bolts per side. For the six just a couple of bolts per side. I'm thinking that Grade 8 hardware should do the trick bolting it all back up. Looks like we will be installing 4 bolts per side.
No swapping the engine crossmember!!!
Only the mount perches need be changed. The 300 ones come off, and the 302/351W ones bolt onto the back of the crossmember.
Been there done that, quite a few times.
In this case there is a distinct difference. On the 300 six truck the crossmember is quite narrower than the truck with the 302. It maybe that the 302 was slated for a big block, I don't know. Since we actually have a warm day today I'll take a good had look. I don't remember that the things I refer to as perches will unbolt. In my mind's eye I see the cross member, the metal(tower/perch) then the motor mount cushion/isolator and then the actual mounting point on the motor it self. But since most of the snow is gone and it's warmer, albeit, windy I can get a good look at them.
The mounts (perches) bolt to the back of the cross, except on the driver side, there are some rivets, but still removeable. The 460 cross does not have the oil filter hole in it. You can look in my gallery for comparison pics.
