In the last few months I've had problems with my TX. Every so often when I shift gears, I will let out the clutch and the truck will act like It's not in gear. Usually when I depress the clutch and let it out again the truck behaves normally. I have a Ford three speed TX with the earlier OD. I have not run the truck without the OD engaged. Help. Chuck Heinz
Why are you thinking this is a tranny/OD problem? By your description, the clutch isn't engaging properly. When you push it in, then let it out, everything is fine? Throwout bearing? Clutch linkage?
Can you give us more information? Is the overdrive an add on unit or is it and old transmission that was put in? The borg warner R 10 overdrive from that period is assembled as a unit, but it looks like the tail end would be bolted to a standard transmission. If it's an R 10, on the passenger side just aft of the overdrive governer there's a casting number. It's upsidedown. Mine says R 10 E-1 under that is W G DIV. Warner Gear Division. If the lever on the dash has shifted the transmission into overdrive, but your solenoid isn't working, the transmission would be freewheeling. Is that what you're experiencing? If you are driving in high and you let off the gas, the engine should drop back to an idle. When you step on the gas again, the engine would rev up again until it engages again. Making you think something was slipping.
Your saying it's in overdrive all the time makes me wonder. The transmission won't let me shift into reverse unless I take it out of overdrive with the dash handle. Dennis
I found a new clue today. I can't pull the OD handle out to disengage the OD unit. The weather will be warm tomorrow so I'll crawl under the beast and see what the bind is. Dennis, I can shift into reverse with the OD engaged, always have been able to. It is a BW R-10 attached to a Ford three speed. As for the clutch engaging, I've had the clutch engaged, let off the gas, and had no power to the drive wheels when I step on the gas again. It was really bad today. I stoped at a stop sign and the OD did not disengage. This is nuts! Chuck
Chuck, while you're out there check the oil level in both cases. I ruined my sun and planetary gears because the oil leaked out last winter. I have the trans on the bench right now, I put another set of od gears in. Dennis
Just a thought, it helps me to shift into reverse as I'm moving the handle on the dash as I'm taking it out of overdrive.
If you can't move the handle, disconnect the cable at the transmission and flip the lever. If the problem still exists when the overdrive is disconnected, it's not the overdrive.
