PCV question

Hey guys! Look, I just got a 78 supercab with a 351M about three weeks ago and have been doing alot of work on it. I just got a new PCV valve and went to install it and I have a question. The Haynes repair manual shows that it goes on the rear of the valve cover on the passenger side but it doesn't fit there. There was an elbow there instead and the PCV valvew was in the oil filler cap. The previous owner didn't have the hose from the passenger side even hooked up and NO air filter in the air cleaner housing. I was wondering, is it different on this year or something? Will this cause the crankcase ventilation to go the wrong way or is there such a thing? I appreciate any help you guys can give me.

pretty sure in 78 and 79 the pcv went on the drivers side valve cover in a push in grommet.

Who knows what could have been changed on that engine over the years.

What kind of oil cap does it have? I think a lot of them (all of them?) in the late 70s have a PCV grommit in the oil cap on the driver's side, and then the other side of the system comes up from the elbow you mention in the passenger side valve cover and goes to the air cleaner.
