i have 2 problems i'm trying to figure out. the smoke is the smaler problem, because i think it's fuel metering. but here's the situation:
I have a 78 bronco with a 72 429 in it and edelbrock performer 460 intake and 600 cfm carb. i go through about 1.5-2 quarts of oil every hundred miles, BUT have no blue or white smoke and no drips or external leaks. I have read about the factory intake on the ford bb that it has a piece of sheetmetal riveted to the underside to prevent oil fron splashing on the hot intake, vaporizing, and being sucked out through the pcv system. i can't be sure the edelbrock intake is a problem, because would they sell an intake that causes this?
the other problem is smoke. the smoke that i do get is black, and only appears on a loaded acceleration with the secondaries open. and the exhaust stinks. (i have dual exhaust with glasspacks)
the black smoke might be from the float not being set right on the secondaries. I have never had a Edelbrock carb only holleys so I don't know how to set it right. I had that problem on my Mopar once. The float pin came out and the float was all the way to the top in the secondary. The mopar also used some oil with out smoke when I first built it with no smoke or leaks. It quit I never knew why.
thanks for the reply...i've been scratching my head for a while over the large quantity of oil i've been using...i have another carb i can try on it...i was also thinking it could be the ignition system???it just has a mallory distributor and a resistor thing on the firewall....no module or anything
If the manifold/shield plate are leaking it would probably be more on one side or on certain cylinders. Check the plugs for even appearance and link fouled ones to the manifold runners that feed it.I've had a problem with losing oil throught the PCV system. No baffles in vavle covers. It seems to atomize the oil to the point that I don't get any smoke at all.
