Question on switching carbs

I have a 1977 F150. 400 with a 2bbl motocraft. The powervalve was bad in it and it had over 100,000 miles on it so I had the carb rebuilt. Ran great for a time. Eventually started to run, not so good and gas mileage is kinda poor. At times it runs a little rich. It has an EGR valve and at times I have debated to put a 4bbl edelbrock and manifold on it. There are times when I am going slow and maybe, lugging a little, the carb will backfire and cut out until I get the rpms picked up or put the truck in idle. Does not do this all the time. I have also looked at maybe putting on another 2bbl, so it will run really good again and maybe get a little better mileage out of it. Any suggestions on what to do?

check your igniton system found a broke spark plug on mine, i have a 1977 ford f250 with a 400......we are putting a edelbrock 4 bbl 600cfm carb and intake on it tomorrow, mine was doing the same thing..........i cant see putting that ugly carb back on.........
i will let you know what happens..............
