Decoding ?

I have been looking at the vin on my 67 F-100 Ranger. I have a question regarding the 6th character. It is F10YLBXXXXX. I know that it is a a F-100 with a 352 and was made in Michigan. What does the B stand for? Is it the Ranger? Was it a special order or Two tone paint? My grandfather bought brand new and wish to restore it correctly. Also where in Michigan was it built. Lancing, Detroit? Also need to know some restorers. I want it to look just like it did when it came off the line. Same over spray and everything. Thanks in advance. I am glad I found this place.

>It is F10YLBXXXXX.

f10-f100
y-352 v8 2v
l-michigan
b? the only other b is in the engine code, b-300 i6 1v carb
there should only be f10yl then the consecutive unit number.

According to my reference, the 'B' prefix on the serial number tells you it was made between March and August of '67. You can plug in your serial no.
March A98,000 - B11,999
April B12,000 - B25,999
May B26,000 - B39,999
June B40,000 - B53,999
July B54,000 - B67,999
Aug B68,000 - B81,999

For the rest of your questions interior/exterior color and trim we'll need the info from the door tag.
Also, my books only says Michigan Truck for assembly plant - maybe someone there knows which is the truck plant.

I think the guy with the production dates was right. That one works. The color is MU which is lunargreen and wimibleton white which it still is. It says body is H81 and transaxle is F08. It looks something like this.
F10YLBXXXXX
131 MU F100 H81 F 08
C5000 172 @ 4200 42

What is the 131 and the C5000 or 05000 and the 42 stand for. I know the 172 @ 4200 is net horsepower. I don't think that I have had the engine ever that high rpm. It is all orginal and has a 2:56 rear end. 4 speed (3 with compound) 2 barrel 352 208hp. It is a ranger package. My grandfather trade in a 64 red styleside for it. It cost $3150 before the trade in. He bought from a guy named Eddy Pepetiti. What a name for a car salesman huh? Thanks a lot. I know what it is I am just curious what all the codes mean. As far as I know it is all orginal execpt tires, fuel pump, water pump, starter, and altenater. I had the carb rebuilt when I was a sophmore in highschool which was 7 years ago.

Lunargreen, the book I'm using shows the following for your info:
131 MU F100 H81 F 08
C5000 172 @ 4200 42

131" is wheelbase; MU is exterior color; H81 is conventional cab pickup in Lt. Parchment vinyl; F tranny code shows 4 sp Sync Warner; 08 rear axle 3.50 Ford; C is front axle 6M capacity; 5000 is GVW; 172@4200 is net HP at rpms; and 42 is Direct Special Order (DSO code) to Fargo

DSO might account for some of the variations you've found. - tim

What does the Direct Special Order mean? It was bought in Billings, MT. Was that the closest place it was shipped to then driven/towed to Billings or did my grandfater order it. I wish I could ask him, he passed away when I was 11. My father doesn't know. I haven't looked at the rear end gears to verify the 2:56. That is off the sales sheets. Thank you for your help. Jeff

Jeff, there should be a tag on the rearend that will give you the ratio or the ring gear/pinion count.
I'm over my head with the DSO codes, sorry. I can only relay what my reference book says for 1967:
"The DSO code: If the vehicle is built on a Direct Special Order, the complete order number will be reflected under the DSO space including the District Code Number."
I goofed up a bit - 42/Fargo is the District Code number whatever that means.
Are you in the Billings area? I'm in Kalispell. You obviously have a project there that has at least as much sentimental value as it does material worth. I'm restoring a 48 half ton that was last registered in Havre. Hope to have it on the road this summer and I've loved every minute that has been invested in the project. Enjoy your truck as much! God bless - tim

Jeff, The dealer could have placed a DSO. A good dealer would know what the guys in his area wanted and would order some trucks accordanly. And your grand dad could have ordered it also, but that would be harder to tell because it would still have been ordered by, and sold to the dealer.

This sounds like a fine truck, but it is not a special order vehicle. The term "DSO" is somewhat misleading. It has two meanings in actuality. "District Sales Office", or, in some instances, "Domestic Special Order". The tag in this example is stamped "42" under DSO. All that means is that the Fargo District Sales Office was responsible for the order.

Special order parts are designated by an additional 4 digit code which would be stamped under DSO as well. Example: my data plate is stamped "373702" under DSO. All that means is that the truck was ordered through the Buffalo sales office and included a Domestic Special Order under No. 3702. What does the 3702 mean? It turns out that, in and of itself, it means NOTHING! :-) It's just an internal order number Ford used.

Your truck is not a Domestic Special Order based upon the lack of the additional 4 digit order number. By the way, there is nothing on the tag which will denote the Ranger package.

mtflat, I am in Stillwater, OK now going to school. I am about finished and want to start on it when I graduate, instead of buying a new truck. It is sitting in Twin Bridges, about 45 miles south and east of Butte. You can go buy and look at it if you wish. It is a small town and it would be easy to find. My parents would eagerly talk to you about. Thank you for all the info on the codes. I always like to know about that stuff. Thanks Jeff

jowilker and StockMan,
Thanks for your helpful input. I enjoy the search for information and DSO codes have been a puzzle up to now.

Lunargreen, I don't get to Twin Bridges very often, but have done some hunting west of there. Email me off forum and we can work out details to get together. That might make a good trial run this summer for my '48.
