TilT Steering Wheel

Truck is a 1978 F-150, 460ci, Auto. , 2WD.

Has anyone on this board ever converted a fix steering to a Tilt steering wheel?.
I would like to do this as a upgrade project.
What steering shafts will interchange or convert easily, no major modifications.

I'm interested too. Mine's a 77F150/460

I notice the Wheel in a 79 is much like the 80 to 86.
Your 78 might convert!
Do you have Cruise? That wiring comes up through the column.

I think my 77 has some wiring differences.

I'd love to add the Factory Cruise from the 80's models as well. I think I'd need a donor truck though.

Dre, I think 78 was the first year that Ford put tilt wheels in pickups. If my memory serves, from past threads I think some of the late 60s full size Ford group cars had columns that could be substituted and fitted in the trucks. You will need to get the old trusty tape measure out, get some good measurements, and start hunting in the salvage yards.

You could then come back here and post your findings. :-)

I think that I'll try that, using the measuring tape and go to a pull your own type salvage yard.
I have heard that some 78-79 Broncos had tilt wheels.
Do you think they may interchange?.
Trying to get a good idea of what vehicles to look at, so that I will not have to spend all day looking in the wrong vehicles.

Thanks for the replies.

My 79 was converted to tilt steering by a previous owner. I think it bolts directly into the same spots as a stocker. I'll have to go out to check my truck to see where its attached though. So yes, the swap can be done.

LoudFords, when you look, check at the bottom of the Dash to see if they had to alter anything there?

Out under the hood where the Flexible Coupling fits down onto the Gearbox, is there any welding there?

The Nightmare might be in the wiring. Is there a bunch of re-connected wires between the two sets of connectors?

Did they put the Cruise Control steering wheel on your truck?

What year Tilt did they put in there?

C'mon baaaack!

dre,
I converted mine from a fixed to a tilt. It was on a 1978, F150, 4x4. The tilt came from a donor truck that was also a 78, F150 4x4. It was a direct bolt up with no changes or modifications. I have heard that 2 wheel drive and 4x4 columns are not the same. I do not know this for a fact though.
Hopes this helps,
Terry

To all,
Ford offered tilt wheel on 78' up trucks, 2wd and 4wd. A 2wd. tilt wheel will work in a 4wd a 2wd straight column will not. I have used many 2wd tilt columns in my 4wds. When working with f-150's make sure to keep all hardware from the standard column.ie the shaft to the box you may need too adapt this to your new column if it does not have it. Also remember to get the steering column cover inside the truck they are different also. A 80 up is totally different and is not a dirrect bolt in besides you could take your pick as to which key you could stsrt the truck with the column or the dash.

Now thats what I like to hear.
Someone has done this, had it done, or has it in there truck.

Instead of "I heard of someone who knows someones friend who thought they heard someone else do it".

Just cutting up a little bit here.
But on the real side, Thanks for all of the replies, It's those little things that get you when doing swaps.

Have not had the chance to ravage the yards yet, "Wet Weather".

SolidAxle!
That was a good post, Thanks.
Do you know if the 78-79 Tilt's work on the 77's?

T-pucker, If you had been reading the posts you would know that from 65 to 79 everything is bolt up exchange. What do you think, will it work on your 77?

Thud,
Yes, the tilt wheel out of a 78' or 79' will work in a 77' however if your looking for originality you'll loose it because the tilt wheels column cover is appr. 4" compared to 2.5" on the 77's. I will soon be putting a somewhat rare bird into my 79' F-350 4x4, a tilt column for a 4 speed. Yes they made them but not nearly as many as the automatics. Hey,it's all fun.

This tilt thing sounds like a great project for my '66! Is the "steering column cover" the part that bolts on the (underhood)firewall, or the interior viewable part of the column? I know that the steering shaft will allow steering wheels to interchange 65-79, but does the tilt have the same size spline? I like the "original" look of the 65-70 wheel. Has anyone measured the column length compared to a non-tilt? Space is short in my cab, can't have any longer (automatic) column..
I know I will need the 65-66 column support to dash mount a 78-79 column, thing the rag joint and shift linkage would be no problem.

Yeah your right SOLIDAXLE, its all in fun. I just didn't see in print, where the Tilt would go into the Older trucks.

Of course I dont need it. But with all the newer stuff I own that does have it, I thought it'd be Kinda Trick.
Like your Four speed on the Column.

I'd also like power windows and Power door locks to go along with my tilt wheel. Is there anything from the Wrecking yards that will "bolt on" for that stuff?

Another thing I've had in mind for my old Tigger is some Fiber Optics to light up the Door handle Bezel, and the Window Winder bezel and a few other things in the dash, like the Heater Controls and Radio *****.

I was going to use Halibut Fishing line. Monofiliment, about .060 Diameter. A person could run the Optic cables from any convenient light source, to practically anywhere in the Truck.
I just need more time, and a better longer lasting attitude.
