Big,
Hey my truck did the same thing,... but make sure it is the EGR valve before just replacing it.
Got mine at auto zone for kinda cheap,... but anyways...

Take a look at the metal pipe coming from the exaust, that connects to the EGR valve itself.
Mine was actually broken slightly, making the EGR valve not work.

Take your egr vavle off and wiggle the pipe, if it bends far or is loose and comes off, that is your problem. There should be a thermal asbestos wrap around the pipe, so it is hard to see if it is broken or cracked under the 302 intake. (if it is the 302 that you have).

Other symptoms.. could be the vacuum hose not connected or simple stuff like that.

Check back at me.

also check the proper operation of the EGR position sensor on top of the EGR valve using a multi meter. If it reads out of spec, replace it with a motorcraft part.

I would stay far away from using Autozone stuff for things like EGR valves. Get motorcraft if possible, from someplace like rockauto.com. It's your truck, but more likely than not, it will cause problems for you eventually.

Pick up a Haynes manual. They have testing procedures for the EGR valve and the EVP. More likely than not, one of the two isn't working right.

Had the same code, checked all vacuum lines and it turned out to be the EVP sensor
that sits on top of the EGR valve was missing one of the 3 nuts that holds it down.
Replaced the nut and code went away. Possible that by being loose there was a vacuum leak. This was on a '90 5.8.

Get a vacuum pump and apply about 8inHG of vacuum to the EGRvalve.... watch it and make sure that it holds vacuum...if it's leaking, replace.

Well its been a min sence I last posted. I have looked under the hood and can not find a vaccum leak. I think the is one though, When i run the truck it makes a wistling sound and when i shut it off it stays and then fades away. I would like to know if anyone can give me more insight into the meaning of code 33 EGR valve opening not detected. whats that mean exactly. I bought a chiltons manual and it sucks. If i want to replace or repair something its great. But wheres the trouble shooting section. I'm in the army and a mechanic at that and i have to say in my expearance with manuals, I know how to use them. But come on the chiltons manual, its horrible!
