3.8 swap

Ive changed my mind, i now feel like doing a 3.8 swap for my 87 bronco II in the future. I need any info you guys got. heres some motor specs

3.8 v6 supercharged
found in late 80's-early 90's t-birds and i think mustangs
The motor dose bolt up to the 5.0 trans as far as i know
dont know about axles yet....
Pretty much the same as the 5.0 swap as far as i know

thanks

It was never in Mustangs, only the '89-'95 Thunderbirds. Good motor, most of them have pretty high mileage by now, though, so figure on a rebuild.

They were mated to AODs, 4R70Ws, and the M5OD. They were used with the 8.8" IFS rear end (28 spline).

i think you'd be better off with a 5.0... personally, the conversion will be cheaper

the 4.0 is a stroked/ bored version of the 2.9. i'd do some Googling on that, i hear the 4.0 has some issues this goes for both the IHC (in house cam) & OHC (Overhead cam)
Although word is; the 2.9/3.0 can be tweeked really well.

Check where you heard for the tweaking on the 2.9. i did my searches on it, and altough my parents are happy, im not that there are NO good proformance parts for the 2.9 outside of a unversial flowmaster or = muffler, tuned TFI box, coil and intake. As for the 4.0 you can atleast put a blower on it.

As for problems with the in house cam, they dont exist. If they did im sure most bronco II's woudnt make it into the 200,000 miles without failure. Mine has 123,000 and there only slight ticking, hardly audioable. Most likey cuase by me crossing wires by mistake anyway.

I put the hammer down on my bronco in my yard (roughly 100-150 feet long) and the thing took off...suprising how much pep that little motor has. And it was spining the tires. Once i took her for some real off roading with 32's ill see if i really want to swap in the 4.0 or just rebuild it.

Well, the 2.9L does have a nagging issue: Cracking heads. You've been lucky if you've not had that issue come up yet. Most any 2.9L owner will claim to have been in that situation. Also, the 2.9L is known for having valve lifter issues. You can rest assured it wasn't from crossing plug wires. Now, whether that's a good thing or not, that's up to you! The rig makes it to 200K miles, easy, the engine...unlikely.

The OHV 4.0 really only has a tendency to loosen up intake manifold bolts.

The OHC 4.0L.....let's not go there. It's not really a great option in pre-95 RBVs anyway.

The 3.slow? Not worth the gain of 0.1Ls to bother.

Most any 2.9L owner will claim to have been in that situation.Only the ones who have overheated the motor...
The cracking of the heads ONLY occurs if you overheat the engine...i dont know why, but it dose. You could have it pinned right upon start-up without letting the engine warmup a second and that wouldnt crack them. Its only the heat. never over heated my motor, never had the problem. Lifters?, easy....adjust the rocker arms, prolly starts to tap because the lifter ware down.

The rig makes it to 200K miles, easy, the engine...unlikely.
When i was looking for my bronco....i saw at least 3 brono IIs with over 200,000 miles. Orignal motor. Test drove a 84 bronco II with the orignal motor with over 230,000!!! Heck mines orignal, and it runs like new. One thing about this motor, with oil changes itll run for ever, beleave it or not its these motors strong piont.
