this is on my old 71 f-150 beater with a 360. It has a new starter and heavy duty battery, but sometimes (usually when the truck is already warmed up) when I go to start it the engine will barely crank, like the battery is almost dead, and not fire. If i wait a while it will turn over like normal and fire right up. !? like I said, I replaced the starter and battery, but it isnt fixed. Could it be the cylanoid? Appreciate any answers fellahs.

If it srews up once then great the next might need a new switch? It might be wore and not letting enough current go to solinoid.I wanted to say corroded cables but the good start kinda rules that out.
Also, try this,Put a volt meter on the start side of the solinoid and crank it with coil wire off,see if the voltage drops when it trys it's slow start?
You should have 13-14volts at battery and i think the voltage should run to starter is the same.

I'll try to remote start it the next time it happens. When you are talking about the "switch" do you mean the ignition switch? I hadn't thought of that. Thanks for the thoughts guys, I really appreciate it.
What is the cold cranking amp rating of your battery? I've seen people grab the wrong size (amp rating that is) & then wonder why the engine cranks too slow. Usually if you go with the highest cold cranking amp battery you can get, you don't have the "hot soak" condition you are describing. At least that has always worked for me.

Tuff-1,have you checked the timing, points, plugs and distributor cap? This might not be all the problem but it cant hurt.Good luck.

I had a bad starter act this way recently. The starter was only a couple months old and wouldn't start good when hot. If I tried to restart when hot, it would barely turn over. If I waited for it to cool down 20-30 min it would start fine. Replaced the starter and it solved my problem.
Just a thought.

Does your truck have headers on it? I've had the same problem starting when hot. I've got headers on my truck and have wrapped the starter with high temp insulation and have no problems since.
LAST EDITED ON 09-Apr-01 AT 06:24 PM (EST)[p]okay, this had been happening, so I checked my ignition, replaced some old components, and re-timed it. So its not that (by the way, I've doubled checked the tim8ing and its good). It was happening with the old starter, which wasn't that old, but I replaced it with a new heavy duty one, its still going on, so I don't think its the starter. The battery is a new Scwab heavy duty truck batter, with 630 cold cranking amps at 0 degrees, so I don't think its that. Most of the time I get a real strong crank and it fires immediatly (even bone cold) and runs great. Its just soemtimes when I run to the store, shut it off, and try to start in again in couple of minutes that it baaaarely cranks over. I'm thinking now it might be the ignition switch (if i read the posts right) or still maybe the cylanoid. The next time it does this I'll hope out and bypass it all with a screwdriver, this will tell me right? Thanks for all the feedbsack, you guys are the best. Oh, and no headers either. With all the rust holes in my fenders i think my under hood temps are pretty low
i had the exact same problem with a 77 150 with a 460.i also replaced starter and battery . both had tested bad. problem was ,one of the "slow turnovers" with the old starter had fried some of the connectors on the battery side of the solenoid.check these and the fusible links coming from this location .
I would make sure you have a good ground wire from the battery to engine and engine to body very important also battery to body i have also seen worn out timming chain and gears act the same way hope this helps shortbedford !! FORDS RULE!!
