old tech vs new

How would you guys compare old chevs or fords with the current crop of trucks being produced today. We have a 99ford with the 5.4 engine and she goes pretty good. My buddy just got an 02 chevy with a 5.3 but he's packing 4.10's in the rear end. He says that it has some ***** too. My question is whether or not these new trucks have much of a chance when it comes to drag racing a 1980's chevy halfton packing a strong 454. It seems like today's engines are pretty potent, but how logical does it sound for a smaller engine to beat an old school big block?

technology. engines these days are far more efficient at making power than the older engines, and thus it doesnt take the large number of cubes to make power like it used to. also engines these have small bores and long strokes, and thus make nearly the same torque those old big blocks did.

that said however, i still prefer the older technology over the new, as the cost of repair is far less.

id figure the new truck would take the old in a drag, but depending on the tranny and gearing in the old truck they may not.

you could take the thousand upon thousands of dollors saved by purchasing an older truck, and invest a crap load of money into beefing up the old big block and blow about anything away.

id bet anything that if chains are hooked the old truck will drag the new one like a rag doll

My experience as of tonight: my chevy with a beefed up 455 would walk all over my friends 5.3 chevy. I'm not saying that his truck don't have *****, cause it does. It's kinda funny, because when I nailed my truck, the guy in the passenger seat nearly smoked his head to the rear window. I just got my truck going after building her up, and I'm pretty impressed with the results

There are too many variables to say which would win. A fresh small motor with the right gears will walk away from a tired big motor. Gearing, traction, overall weight, etc.

Another advantage the old truck has is lighter weight. The curb weights just keep going up with every new generation of trucks. In a drag race it is still hp/lb as far as acceleration goes. Gearing also matters, but I am talking about stock vs stock. A typical older GM half ton 454/automatic typically got 3.08 gears. Most of the new trucks have 3.73's. It would be close.
