I'd say at least 3/4 gal of primer, 2 qt base and 1 gal clear. Sometimes you get it cheaper by the gal, so I'd probably get extra. the base only needs to cover so 2 qts might get you by, the clear should have extra coats, this is where you'll wet sand / polish to work out any mistakes and get the mirror finish.
It's better to have a bit extra and it also depends on the equipment, the new HVLP setups use less than the old style and some guns won't pickup the last 1/2 cup from the bottom of the gun.
If your doing the inside cab, under hood, inside bed, inside doors... I'd add 1qt each primer, base, clear.
I didnt use a base/clear but I used 2 quarts of primer, and about 3/4 gal. of color, but I bought a full gallon, its cheaper, and I have spare stuff that will match. I didnt do the inside or bed. My trucks a 75 standard cab, long bed.
I ran into the same problem awhile back, confused and in a hurry. We have all been there for one reason or another. Believe me you can never buy too much. I painted my truck and a month later I was hit by a bingo player late for her game. Let me say it was a good thing I bought extra.
thank you everyone for the response, i am getting the paint from NAPA, so i didnt know whether to trust the employees behind the counter on how much to get. they dont regularely sell/paint vehicles, at least at my NAPA. they told me to get a gallon of primer, and a gallon of paint, i am using the Crossfire brand.
again thanks for the replies,
