Transmission w/overdrive question

I got a 2006 F150 xlt w/automatic transmission. I notice that I have the option of driving with overdrive on or off. I mainly drive in light city traffic sometimes heavy or moderate short highway trips. What does the overdrive feature do and should I be driving with it on or off? <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

The only reason you'd probably ever turn it off is if you were in an extremely mountainous region that was making you downshift a lot. Either that or towing. Typically though, it's just towing.

92 merc is correct...However I find myself turning it off when I Drive home from work for short stints of city driving. Sometimes the traffic goes from 60-5-45-15...etc going home and to prevent the constant shifting in and out of high gear I will shut it off. Main thing is this...If you notice it constantly shifting in and out...you will be better off to turn it off until you feel it won't be a problem anymore. Its more or less up to your driving style and the traffic/road conditions that determine wether or not you will be better off disengaging it.

If I'm doing lcoal driving at speeds between 0-45 I always turn the OD off. If I don't I'll notice the tranny doing too much "searching" from 3rd to 4th and vice versa, which is not good for the mileage anyway.

Thanx for the information. So I gather it's better to leave it on unless I notice the transmission is doing a lot of down shifting looking gears. I drove home from work today with it on in moderate traffice. It seems the transmision was shifting smoohtly, didn't notice any major times where is was down shifting a lot. Seems to be shifting throught the gear pretty smooth.

Just as long as it's not hunting between 4 and 5 you can leave it on. The only time I ever turn it off is normal driving with a trailer, or heavy load in the bed, it's saves the trans, and at that point, fuel mileage is on the backburner anyway, which is the real point of overdrive. sometimes I will let it go in while cruising fast with the trailer empty, 75-80, but as a general rule of thumb leave it off with the trailer.
