I have a 1982 ford van, with low mileage, about 66k on her. It has the 300CID six cylinder engine. I don't go anywhere in a hurry, and speed is not a concern, gas mileage is though. I drive her alot, and the cost of gas kills me, can you give me any advice on how to improve mileage please?
Keep the tires pumped up.....reduces rolling resistance.
Remove unnecessary weight in the van....why lug it around?
Drive like you're not in a hurry to get there.
Consolidate trips.
If a std tranny, shift sooner....rpms = gas burned.
Reduce sitting idling/warming up....hit the road, jack!
Keep the engine tuned up and make sure each wheel turns freely (dragging brakes).
That's a good start.
I drive an 81 E100 two seater former water delivery van with dual gas tanks. Got it early last year and was completely empty as the owner took all shelves out before putting up for sale. It is insulated with foam though. But had to fix the rear brakes before driving it and replaced all tires with new ones. Makes a big difference.
Another suggestion is to drive with the windows up. The airflow acts like a "drogue" sail and it actually takes more gas to keep the same speed. That also helped increase my mileage.
