I have an 89 f250 with a 460....can I remove the air pump stuff, the hoses and metal lines that run to the converter...the filter and silencer? I'm in Florida so there's no inspection...thanks...Mick
I've been wondering the same thing. I think you can. I have a '89 F350 5.8 5 spd. I'm seriously considering removing the smog pump system. it should free up some power as well as the engine compartment. I wonder if the pump could be removed w/out affecting the other components/brackets and if the belt tensioner would take up the slack......anybody know?
Removing the smog pump doesnt free up much if any horsepower. I have seen where people said they only gained 1-2 hp from removing it. The belt tensior probably won't take up enough slack for that to work. So that is probably not worth the effort. Removing the air filter silencer should help with performance gains though if you have a K&N or similar filter setup.
IF you still have the cats then removing the air pump is a bad idea. It helps to cool them down. If you remove it they'll clog up and you'll have less power. You're better off putting in a less restrictive exhaust system from the cats back. We've had good luck with just straight pipes and no mufflers.
I think that the purpose of the air pumps is to dilute the exhaust gas to lower the PPM percentage, not to cool the converter, they need to run at high temps to work properly....removing the air pump itself is possible, but you will have to try several different, shorter belts until you get the right one....not after HP, just get rid of come the the clutter under the hood....Mick
I took all the smog stuff off my truck. I have a 91 f150 with a 5.0 and I have headers on it so there is no cats. I just took my old belt to the parts store and got a belt that was 2" shorter (i do believe) and the tensioner was in the perfect spot.
if anybody is doing this trying to gain ponys, do know that with speed density it will do VERY little to power (to remove the smog pump). Even less gain with speed density than with MAF, which won't be very significant anyway.
I did it on my 91, I did not notice a power change, but I did notice a little better throttle response due to 1 less accessory. If you remove that you will need to plug the hoses that ran to it or run bolts in the back of the heads were the system was bolted on.
