Most likely cause of 4X4 not working

Hi,

I'm looking at buying 94' Ranger 4X4 with the 4.0L engine and 5spd. tranny and 139K miles. The transfer case is operated by pushbuttons on the dash. I think it also has auto-hubs. The seller says that the four wheel drive quit working a while back. What is the most likely cause? Transfer case motor, control unit behind drivers seat, dash mounted switches or faulty auto-hubs? Just wanted to hear from some Ranger owners with their opinions/experiences.

Thanks for your replies,

Carl

A very common problem for electronic shift on the fly, is dirty contacts on the Transfer case motor, due to lack of use...They also have a fuse which is known to Blow. That would be my first two choices.

Ohhhhhh, I like gambling . For all I've ever read about failures on the 4X on Rangers, my vote is on a shift motor issue. Just a guess given what is noted in the post. You can always do a quick DIY (do it yourself) diagnosis on the 4X to try to determine the cause of failure before buying.
