Starter relay trouble

I have a 92 E250 w/351W. I started hearing a single click when I tried to start the engine and then nothing would happen. I tested the battery and that is fine. So I figured it must be the starter. Put a new one in and still the same single click noise when turning the key. With a second person helping me by turning the key while I had my head under the hood, I traced the clicking noise back to a small round thing mounted next to the rear of the driver side headlights. Found out in the Haynes book that this is a secondary solinod of some kind. I replaced that with a new one and still the same damn single click when I turn the key. What do I do now ?

Sounds like you have a bad spade connector at the starter, this is very common.

I had the same problem with a 92 E-150 and 351 eng. The spade connector gets corroded and needs to be replaced. Poor design. I also replaced the starter before I found the real problem. I ran a new wire with a new spade connector from the starter relay to the starter. And it fixed the problem for about 15 months. Then it happened again. Fixed it same way. The wire was all green and corroded, and pulled right out of the crimped on spade connector. I carry a copper wire with a spade connector, for emergencys. I can pull back the motor cover and reach the starter from inside, and touch the wire to the cigarette ligter outlet, to get started in an emergency.
