Whenever it's cold enough and the PCM calls in the GPR for heating if the GPR
isn't in good condition it's not going to allow max current for heating the GP elements.
This in turn will result in a drop of efficiency(mpg) because diesel cylinders don't work as well when cold. Once warm enough the GPR is clicked out of the picture
by the PCM.
My .02 worth.

Just my 2 cents but a GPR will not cause bad MPG.The glow plugs are only on for a maxium 2 minutes when you start your truck. At no other time will the glow plugs come on.They do not come onwhile driving. So in turn does not effect MPG.For it to effect MPG,you would have to be driving your truck, without letting it warm up any.Even then i would not think it would affect MPG.

I quote my Helm manual on Description and Operation:
"The glow plug system is electronically controlled by the PCM. If the temperature is below 55°C (131°F) the PCM will energize the glow plugs immediately after the key is placed in the ON position. Then, depending on the readings from the engine oil temperature (EOT) sensor and the barometric pressure (BARO) sensor, the PCM determines how long the glow plugs will be on. "
If the glow plugs aren't getting max current then they won't heat the cylinder as effectively therefore reducing burn efficiency.

Only while starting, the glow plugs do not energize while driving.....There for can not affect MPG.
Sorry ...i disagree..it's right in my Helm manual. They do activate when driving.
What is your source of info or reference?
Helm quote:"The PCM protects the glow plugs by energizing them for short durations if the battery voltage is abnormally high."

ford manual. And myself,I drive 100 miles to work everyday and here in Ct it is cold.I think that i would see it in my volt meter if they did turn on.My volt meter is not the stock one.

My have always gone out in under two minutes. The tell-tale sign being in the mornings or at night it is dark enough to notice the amperage draw (dimming) on the dome lights and headlights. One started and going down the road the headlights become brighter along with the dome lights (if they are on) becoming brighter once the current draw is no longer present.

The point here is also that a bad gpr is not allowing max current to flow thereby
creating more white smoke(unburnt fuel). This does have an effect on mileage
overall. Your not burning fuel.
