cooling problems, HEADACHE!!
Guys, I am going nuts. I have this problem with my truck 93 F-150 4.9L Y engine with a 5 speed. When you start it cold and go down the road or set in the yard the water temp will climb almost past the normal range ( past the L in MORMAL) but suddenly drop back to the N or O and stay there. I have changed the t-stat, but used a generic, It acts like it is sticking or opening late? There are no leaks and I have just replaced the leaking core and old cap, the radiator is fine, and I dont see any hoses sucking together. I DONT KNOW! But like I said once it drops from semi-overheating the first time it is fine untill it sits for a while and cools off. I hope it is the t-stat. Any Ideas?

Is the temp actually getting hot, or is it your sensor. My trucks temp climbs up past half and goes back down to a quarter every morning. I've always ignored it. This could be caused by a to high of a thermastat? Try a 110, if not already? Unless there is air stuck in the line.

Don't run a 110 permanently, the heater will not work good and you will get bad fuel economy.
Pull the T-stat out and test it in a pot of boiling water. Use a thermometer to really get exact, see if its opening properly.
A faulty T-stat would be the cheapest place to start. Also when you changed that stuff did you get rid of the airlock? Could also be pushing on that air until it gets warm enough moving it further down the system and repeating the cycle each time you start.
Just a coupel ideas.

If you did than that is your problem, in fact if there is anything napa on your truck than that is a problem. get a stant stat. big difference. the napa and similar garbage are like half the weight (if that) of a qaulity stant and are made of garbage low quality **** metal as are all there parts. stats like these will cause the motor to heat up to 210 and back down to 160 continuosly during driving.

Thats why they are good than. they are NOT made by napa. Napa tries to make a profit on us the consumer by putting out low qualitly, cheap, garbage, ***** parts. we shouls startan alliance now and pledge never to buy from napa!

Tanks for all the help. I did change the t-stat right after I got the truck because the old one was stuck open. I say this because the truck never got past the C or the line right past it. Then the heater core started leaking, and I change that. But The problems started when I changed the t-stat. I bought it at carquest but the next one will be a stant then it will match my radiator cap ha ha ha. I have tried to get the air out but every time it tries to run hot I have to put more water in. Any advice is welcome. As far as the parts go, all the parts houses try to sell you crap at a marked up price, you just have to take a chance or follow others advice.

napa sells excellent high quality parts. but you have to be known by the staff, or ask for the good parts. the reason they give the cheap parts is because that is what the curbside parts changers ask for. cheap junk. i can stand at the counter at the local napa, and 9 out of 10 walk ins, will ask for the cheapest part there is. then question when the mechanic next to them gets the same part, but is $25 more. the answer is always the same. he gets the good parts with a guarantee and don't come back. you asked for the cheap parts, you get cheap parts that are only guaranteed till they get out the door.

Yeah, wow, I don't understand the hostility toward NAPA. I have spent thousands there over the years and have ALWAYS had GREAT luck with their parts and employees. NAPA at least around here caters to the professional mechanic more than the homeowner type. NAPA doesn't make ANY of their own parts as far as I know, they outsource from everywhere. For example WIX filters, Spicer balljoints, etc. Ask for the better stuff at NAPA, pay just a little more than the Chinese crap at Autozone, and don't replace it for as long or longer than the OEM part. And I have fixed a crapload of problems like that.

my worst complaint with napa are the napa branded thermostats. they are half the weight of a stant stat and feel like there made of plastic.
i put one in my motor was runinng up and down constantly from 220 to 170 derees. put a stant in and runs at 195 perfect and never moves more than 10 degrees either way. as far as asking for the better parts, that is what ill do from now on.

I have to echo tjc transport on this one. I have used the same parts house, Allied Auto, for years. When I buy my parts they don't even ask me - they just get the best quality part that they carry because they know that I will refuse the economy branded parts. I get a really decent discount, better than the "counter price" that they give to the regular walk ins so I don't mind paying a few $$ above the other guy. I am almost always happy with the part and if there is ever a problem I get warranty with no questions asked. Just my .02.

OK, your beef is with the t-stats. that make more sense now. the local napa here only sells stant. the store owner has been in business for 25+years. he knows what too buy and what to stay away from.
