this knock is really noticeable it not like a tap or a ting its a knock like something is hitting hard. also when I let the clutch out the motor shakes a little more I am wondering if my fly wheel or pressure plate is out of balance or something so that once I get it reved up going down the high way eveything goes in play no what I mean thorwing evything out of balence making it fight against it self?

With the engine on, pull on spark plug wire on the distributor at one time, rev the engine to half throttle, listen for engine knock, and put spark plug wire back on distributor. Do this with every spark plug wire on the distributor and note which cylinder or spark plug wires removes or eliminates the knock. Post your results. At the same time when you pull the plug wire, check to see if the idle drops, if the idle does not drop, you isolated the problem.

Seems like the clutch has some hot spots on the flywheel and pressure plate and clutch disk, creating the shaking on the take off.
did the spark plug wire test on the # 3 & 4 there is no differnce in the motor and the plugs are oil fowled really bad changed the plugs same thing little better but no alot change in idle not like the other ones do. I havent did a compression check yet probally wont because dont have a guage. I knew the rings were going and I knew the plugs were foweling but diddnt think it would make it knock. NOw that I have been thinking It might be the rings are worse then I thought and might be starting to slap.
I know the flywheel is bad far as it has a hair line crack but figure the chatter on take off but didnt know if it would cause it to shake the motor or not.

Try Autozone or Checkers, they might have a rental. or check with the local rental shops. The engine will need a complete compression test to verify the condition of the engine.
Okat guys did the compression check I dont think it is good, also did the paper on the tail pipe test well the paper alomost got sucked up the pipe on both sides.
#1-60psi #2-70psi #3-70psi #4-45psi #5-50psi #6-75psi #7-65psi #8-55psi
78fordranger, it definitely an internal problem in the engine.
Run a thicker oil and some Lucas Engine Oil Treatment temporarily till you get time for an engine rebuild or a rebuilt engine.

Do a recheck on the compression, only this time squirt some engine oil into each cylinder just before you test that cylinder. If the numbers come up a lot (20-50 psi) you have bad rings. If not you have bad valves (rings could also still be bad, but you won't know until you pull the motor down).
I got oil all over my plugs on the #4,5 and 2 which has good compression also I am thinking about putting in a 400 which I got and it runs good at least for now the 390 is a 105 block which from what I understand as really good potential. so at least I will still be able to drive the truck and when I get enough money for a good rebuild then I will figure out which motor to do. thanks guys for all the input on this It has been a nightmare seems soon as I get one thing fixed something else breaks. The truck hasnt had good maintence I mean my dad is disabled and told me he hasnt changed the oil in it in about 7 years just added oil when it was low. I dont see my dad very much so when he told me that I understand why the motor is in the shape it is in now.
7 years on the same oil ? WOW and I thought Toyota's had a good track record LOL.. I was wondering if someone could go into more detail on the papaer / tailpipe test..never heard of this...
I have been told that if you hold a dollar bill I used paper towel and if it sucks into the tail pipe then I got valve problems I held it about a half inch away from the pipe and it sucked the corner of the paper in to the pipe for a moment so I get this paper going in and out of the pipe really quick and it should just blow away never come back into the exhaust first time I did it myself also on the oil I changed it the other day it had abunch of sludge in the bottom and smelt of gas really bad. The oil was black after I started it and checked it again I mean really black
