Sometimes lifters and valves get sticky with carbon deposits and other build-up. This causes a clicking noise from the motor usually when it is cold or the vehicle is warming up. After the oil gets circulating and up to temperature usually the lifter noise silences itself.

I have a 91 with 350,000km that has had lifter noise for 8 years. I used Seafoam last month and it seemed to help a little but there is still noise in severe cold when it's first started.
