I have a 79 F150 4x4 with a Ford removable carrier axle. How do I get the rear break drums off? I have a manual that says to "Remove the three retaining nuts." I don't see any nuts or anything else that appears to hold the drums to the hub flange. Any help will be welcome. The last time I took a break drum off, it was a 46 Ford, and they just had a big nut on the end of the axle.
The retaining nuts the manual is talking about are small copper washers that the factory put over the studs to the drum to hold it on for some reason. But being 22 years old they have surely been chiseled off and thrown away when the first brake job was done on it. The way to get the drum off is to first adjust the brakes in so they are not in contact with the drum. Then, take a large hammer and hit outward on the drum while rotating it. Dont hit on the outside edges of the drum or it will break. It might take a lot of hitting, but this is how they come off.
That book might be referring to three Speed nuts, or little flat spring steel clips, that were on the Lug studs, and were never put back on after the first removal.
The Big thing to remember is the Brake shoes will be expanded past the Ridge on the inside of the Drum.
Be sure to back the Shoes all the way off, and make sure the Hand brake cable has some slack, or you might beat that drum to death and still not get it off.
Some Thread solvent around the Hub of the Drum might help too. Sometimes they rust very tight between the Axle and the inside of the Drum.
I havent had a 46 Ford Hub off since the Fifties some time!
